In this peer-reviewed article, Tim Swickard examines the two substantial sources of urban environmental degradation—one from past industrial contamination activities, and one from the diversion of urban growth to outlying “greenfields,” creating a second front of degradation commonly known as urban or suburban “sprawl.”

Tim demonstrates how the resolution of both historical contamination and non-substainable land use can be achieved by private sector redevelopment of interior urban brownfields, and offers five governmental policies that would greatly facilitate and enhance the resolution of these two significant environmental problems.
